Sydney - Weight training improves the muscle tone of people with multiple sclerosis and can help them get through daily tasks more easily, researchers in Australia have found.
Physiotherapists at Melbourne's La Trobe University said their finding might lead to doctors reassessing their consulting room advice.
MS patients are usually told to avoid strenuous exercise as it could exacerbate their condition.
Joy Hall, diagnosed with MS three years ago, took part in the weight training trial. She told national broadcaster ABC that she had noticed an all-round improvement.
"It did give me a lot more energy and I just felt generally stronger, very pleased and very positive," Hall said. "I could walk better because I had the dexterity. I could write better. In fact, my writing is back to normal. In fact, everything is better." - Sapa-dpa
