Intraspinal Implant Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells May Not Heal The Demyelinated Spinal Cord |
|
2008.11.14. 19:14 |
Multiple sclerosis is a disease caused by the loss of the myelinated sheath surrounding the nerve fibers of the spinal cord. Therapeutic hope for curing multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases has included the possibility that stem cell transplants could help remyelinate the spinal cord. Accordingly, researchers from the University of Cambridge (UK) conducted experiments using animal models to see if the direct implantation of multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) (derived from a different rat's adult bone marrow, i.e. allogenic) into the demyelinated rat spinal cord would be therapeutic and remyelinate the damaged area.

Scientists Identify Molecular Signals Affecting Myelin Repair In Multiple Sclerosis |

A collaboration of five of the world's leading neuroscientists, including Robert Miller, Ph.D., professor of neurosciences at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, has identified three new "switches," or signals, operating in the brain and spinal column that appear to turn on and off the nerve cell's ability to repair myelin. Myelin is the protective coating surrounding nerve cells that is damaged by multiple sclerosis (MS). The scientists' findings are a critical first step in understanding myelin repair and its role in treatments for MS and other demyelinating diseases.

A most nyolcvanöt éves kutató ma is mindennap bejár az egykori kisvárdai agrárkutató intézeti szobájába. Újból nagy fába vágta a fejszéjét: a ma még gyógyíthatatlannak tartott sclerosis multiplex gyógyszerén töri a fejét.

2005.04.28. 00:01 |
Drugs such as modafinil (an agent promoting wakefulness) are used to try to counteract the fatigue of multiple sclerosis (MS), but evidence for their efficacy is scant. A randomised, placebo controlled, double blind study of modafinil including 115 patients found no improvement after five weeks ( Neurology 2005;64: 1139-43[Abstract/Free Full Text]), although a randomised controlled crossover trial of aspirin in 30 patients with MS published in the same issue (1267-9) shows that the drug alleviated the problem. The authors propose that aspirin may work by blocking the output of the hypothalamus, which in turn affects the neuroendocrine and autonomic responses important in the perception of fatigue.
