On the HealthBeat Wrap, NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh had advice on how to survive a nasty stomach bug making the rounds, a new weight-training program for multiple sclerosis patients and new guidelines for pregnant women with asthma.
Asthma And Pregnancy
According to new research, asthma worsens in about 30 percent of pregnant women, but since doctors cannot predict in whom, new guidelines for close monitoring during pregnancy were issued.
The recommendations call for limiting exposure to asthma triggers. They also suggest pregnant women keep inhalers on hand at all times, and in some cases use inhaled or even oral steroids.
The expert panel said poorly controlled asthma can cause serious complications to women and their unborn babies.
MS Weight Training
Weight training can help patients with multiple sclerosis, according to a new study.
Florida researchers put MS patients on an eight-week supervised resistance-training program. Patients in the study worked on their legs, abdomen and lower back twice a week for 30 minutes. After two months, researchers found the patients had stronger muscles, walked better, and reported less overall fatigue.
Doctors are now expanding the study to include more intensive training.
Latest Stomach Bug
Emergency rooms are trying to keep up with a very contagious stomach virus making the rounds.
If you have the nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever, it will probably last about 12 to 24 hours. For adults, experts suggest ice chips until the vomiting goes away, and for children, a teaspoon of Pedialite every five minutes, or Popsicles.
Once you can tolerate sips of clear fluids, you can add the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.
Of you catch the bug, you should feel better in about a day. But if the vomiting lasts longer, the diarrhea hasn't stopped in three days or if you see blood in the diarrhea or vomiting or more than mild pain, see a doctor.
